What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I have just published a series of cards designed to help you beat writer's block! It's called The Writing Deck and is published by Princeton Architectural Press. I did it with a friend because we both had experienced writer's block, but for different reasons. I couldn't work out what to say, she couldn't work out how to say it. So the cards are designed to solve both problems. Form and content.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I play scrabble a lot
What authors, or books have influenced you?
All of them. Even the ones you don't enjoy are hugely influential. I have most openly 'borrowed' from children's author and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce. He's a genius.
What are you working on now?
A book about poetry, but it will never sell because rhyming doesn't translate, so publishers hate hate hate (it),
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read. Also, you are only a new author once, and for a short time. So make sure you think about your second book before you cause a splash with your first!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Everyone is entitled to a bad first draft. Get the first draft onto the page and then you can fix it. Don't think you have to get it right the first time.
What are you reading now?
The newest Asterix book (Vercingetorix's daughter), Rachel Cusk's Outline, and my sister, the serial killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.
What's next for you as a writer?
More books.
